VISN 3 Geriatric Research, Education & Clinical Center (GRECC)

The Veterans Health Administration initiated a strategy in the mid-1970's to focus attention on the aging veteran population to increase the basic knowledge of aging, to transmit that knowledge to healthcare providers and to improve the quality of care to the aged. A cornerstone of this strategy has been the development of Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Centers (GRECCs). The GRECCs are "centers of excellence" designed for the advancement and integration of research, education and clinical achievements in geriatrics and gerontology into the total VA healthcare system.

The VISN 3 Geriatric Research, Education & Clinical Center (GRECC) is headquartered at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx and is affiliated with Mount Sinai School of Medicine and its Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine.

VA Associated Health Training
The GRECC hosts trainees funded through the VA Associated Health Training Program in allied health fields such as nursing, social work, psychology, pharmacy, and audiology/speech pathology. VA Associated Health trainees have field placements at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center as well as other VA facilities in VISN 3. These trainees work in collaboration with Mount Sinai geriatric fellows, medical students, and medicine residents who rotate through the James J. Peters VA Medical Center. In addition to their clinical experience, the traineeship includes weekly interdisciplinary seminars and other educational opportunities. The seminars focus on geriatric care, palliative care, and interdisciplinary teamwork in a varied format including case analysis and interactive exercises.
